Regular Palkia is still usable, though it is generally less attractive as a new investment because Origin Forme Palkia has better stats and a stronger signature move.

Palkia is much less impressive as a Water-type attacker. Although it can learn Aqua Tail and Hydro Pump, it does not have a Water-type Fast Attack. That prevents it from using a complete Water moveset and leaves it behind specialized Water attackers.

The best form depends on whether you prioritize Master League, raid damage, resource efficiency, or collection value.

Origin Forme Palkia: Best Overall

Origin Forme Palkia is normally the best version to power up. It has higher Attack and Defense than regular Palkia and reaches 4,683 CP at Level 50, compared with 4,512 CP for regular Palkia.

Its largest advantage is Spacial Rend. In raids, Spacial Rend gives Origin Palkia a powerful and more practical Dragon Charged Attack. In PvP, the combination of Dragon Breath, Aqua Tail, and Spacial Rend gives it fast pressure, shield-baiting potential, and a strong finishing move.

Origin Palkia also has access to the Spacial Rend Adventure Effect, giving it utility even when it is not battling.

Shadow Palkia: Best for Raw Raid Damage

Shadow Palkia benefits from the standard Shadow damage modifier, allowing it to deal more damage than regular Palkia. It works best as a Dragon attacker with Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor.

That additional damage comes with two important costs. Shadow Palkia takes more damage in return, and powering up a Shadow Legendary requires substantial Stardust, Palkia Candy, and Candy XL. A low-IV Shadow Palkia is therefore not automatically worth taking to Level 50.

Shadow Palkia makes the most sense for raid-focused players who already have strong teams and enough resources to build another premium Dragon attacker.

Regular Palkia: Still Usable, but Harder to Recommend

Regular Palkia remains a capable Pokémon, particularly when you already own a high-IV copy at Level 40 or above. Its Water/Dragon typing, high Attack, and Dragon Tail–Draco Meteor moveset still give it practical raid value.

Do not discard a powered-up regular Palkia simply because Origin Forme exists. The resources already invested may make it more useful in the short term than an unpowered Origin Palkia.

How to Get Palkia in Pokémon GO

Palkia is a Legendary Pokémon and does not normally appear as a standard wild spawn. Its availability is tied to limited events and raid rotations.

Five-Star Palkia Raids

Regular Palkia and Origin Forme Palkia usually return through five-star raids. Their appearances may last only a few days, especially during large events that rotate several Legendary bosses.

Origin Forme Palkia appeared during Road of Legends in July 2026. Palkia caught during the relevant event period had a chance to know Spacial Rend, but the move was not guaranteed on every encounter.

Shadow Palkia Raids

Shadow Palkia is available through five-star Shadow Raids during selected rotations. Unlike normal raid bosses, a five-star Shadow boss can become enraged during battle, substantially increasing its offense and defense.

Palkia can also be obtained through trading. Because it is Legendary, the trade counts as a Special Trade and can require significant Stardust, especially when Palkia is not registered in the recipient’s Pokédex.

Trading rerolls IVs, so you cannot directly transfer a specific 15/15/15 Palkia to another Trainer. Lucky Trades are particularly valuable for Legendary Pokémon because they reduce future Stardust power-up costs.

Giovanni and Previous Research

Shadow Palkia originally appeared as a Giovanni encounter during a Team GO Rocket event. That does not mean Giovanni always rewards Shadow Palkia; his final Pokémon changes between Rocket rotations.

Unless a new event specifically announces Shadow Palkia as Giovanni’s reward, Shadow Raids and trading are the more relevant acquisition methods.

This is regular Palkia’s strongest straightforward Dragon-type raid set. Dragon Tail delivers strong same-type damage, while Draco Meteor provides a powerful—but expensive—Charged Attack.

Hydro Pump does not turn Palkia into a top Water attacker because Palkia lacks a Water-type Fast Attack.

Best Origin Palkia Moveset for Raids

Dragon Tail and Spacial Rend is the recommended Origin Palkia raid moveset. Dragon Breath can still be useful, especially in Trainer Battles and certain Party Power strategies. For a simple raid build, however, Dragon Tail is the more natural choice.

Best Origin Palkia Moveset for PvP

Dragon Breath applies consistent Fast Attack pressure. Aqua Tail is relatively inexpensive and forces opponents to decide whether to spend shields. Spacial Rend provides the powerful closing damage Origin Palkia needs against neutral targets.

Unlocking a second Charged Attack is essential for serious Master League use. A Palkia with only Aqua Tail lacks finishing power, while a Palkia with only Spacial Rend becomes predictable and slow.

Best Shadow Palkia Moveset

Shadow Palkia cannot match Origin Palkia’s overall flexibility without Spacial Rend. Its greatest value comes from applying the Shadow damage bonus to Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor in raids.

Before building one, remove Frustration during an event that allows Charged TMs to replace it. Frustration otherwise occupies a Charged Attack slot and severely limits Shadow Palkia’s usefulness.

Can Origin Palkia Learn Spacial Rend with an Elite TM?

Spacial Rend was originally treated as an event-exclusive attack that Origin Palkia could not learn through any TM. That changed temporarily during Pokémon GO’s 10th Anniversary celebrations.

From Road of Legends through Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global, Trainers could use an Elite Charged TM to teach Spacial Rend to Origin Forme Palkia for the first time. The announcement described this as a limited-time feature, not a permanent expansion of the Elite TM move pool.

Before using an Elite Charged TM, open the item, select Origin Palkia, and inspect the available move list. Do not consume the item based on an older guide or assume Spacial Rend is permanently available.

Regular Palkia cannot learn Spacial Rend. The signature move belongs to Origin Forme Palkia.

Palkia Adventure Effect: What Does Spacial Rend Do?

Spacial Rend is both a Charged Attack and an Adventure Effect. Activating the Adventure Effect costs:

While active, Spacial Rend increases the distance from which you can encounter wild Pokémon. Additional time can be added in 10-minute increments, with up to two hours added each time you select Use and up to 24 hours stored in total. It cannot run at the same time as another Adventure Effect.

The effect can be useful during dense events, Community Days, Spotlight Hours, or situations where Pokémon appear just beyond the normal interaction radius.
