Eternatus Pokémon GO Return Status and Candy Math

On October 26, 2026, the official Pokémon GO account posted a 15-second clip of Eternamax Eternatus hanging over a Power Spot, with the line "Keep your eyes on the sky." If you missed Eternatus in 2025, that's the news you've been waiting for. If you caught one, you already know the other problem: near Level 40, a single power-up costs 890 Candy.

This guide separates what's confirmed about the return from what's only leaked, explains how Eternatus worked the first time, and works out what powering it up really costs, level by level. We checked every date against Pokémon GO's own event pages from 2025 and 2026, then did the candy math ourselves. Power-up costs come from Eternatus's per-level cost table, and every CP number uses the same CP multipliers as our Pokémon GO CP calculator. When a number comes from players rather than the game, we say so.

Is Eternatus Coming Back to Pokémon GO?

Very likely, but nothing about the date or how you'll get it is official yet. Here's where each piece of news stands as of October 27, 2026.

How You Got Eternatus in Pokémon GO in 2025

Eternatus made its worldwide debut during Pokémon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale, and you didn't catch it in a raid. You earned it on a GO Pass, a free rank-up track where tasks like winning Max Battles give you points.

GO Points had a daily cap until August 22, and the cap came off for the Max Finale weekend of August 23 and 24. Spending 200 PokéCoins doubled a win's rewards, and some players saw drops as low as 60 Candy and 38 Candy XL.

The Pokémon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale page said Eternatus could be caught only once. At Level 15, a 10/10/10 Eternatus has 1,826 CP and a perfect one has 1,898. The IVs players posted, like 10/10/11 and 13/12/11, all sit in that range.

If November copies 2025, Trainers who missed Eternatus would get an encounter from a pass, and owners would get Candy instead. That's our reading of 2025, not an announcement.

Eternatus vs Eternamax Eternatus in Pokémon GO

Eternatus is the Pokémon you keep. It's a Poison and Dragon type you can power up and take into raids, Max Battles and trainer battles.

Eternamax Eternatus is the giant boss form, and you only ever fight it, in six-star Max Battles at Power Spots. When your group wins, it shrinks back to regular Eternatus and the battle ends with rewards instead of a catch. Your own Eternatus never turns into Eternamax either, not even in a Max Battle's Max Phase.

How Much Candy Does Eternatus Need in Pokémon GO?

Far more than any other Pokémon. A regular Legendary needs fewer than 300 Candy to climb from Level 15 to 40. Eternatus needs 8,900 Eternatus Candy for the same climb. The table counts Candy and Stardust from the Level 15 encounter and shows CP for a perfect 15/15/15 Eternatus.

The wins column assumes the 2025 reward of 70 to 140 Candy per win, averaged to 105, and no Candy from a pass. The number in brackets assumes you double every win for 200 PokéCoins. At the low end of 70 Candy per win, Level 40 takes 128 wins. The 2026 rewards haven't been announced.

Why Level 39 Is a Good Place to Pause Eternatus

The last two power-ups before Level 40 cost 890 Candy each. That's 1,780 Candy, a fifth of the whole climb from Level 15, for 0.7% more Attack.

Think of it as Candy per 1% of extra Attack. From Level 15 to 20, 1% costs about 39 Candy. From 35 to 38.5 it costs about 875, and from 39 to 40 about 2,470. So if you run low in the high 30s, park Eternatus at Level 39 and finish the job once you have the full 1,780. Until then, your Candy does more on its Max Move, covered below.

How Far Eternatus Candy XL Takes You

Candy XL only powers Eternatus up from Level 40, and the first XL steps are cheap. Level 40 to 42 costs 400 Candy XL for another 1.3% Attack, a better deal than the last two Candy steps.

Farming for Level 40 also fills your XL stash. At the 2025 rate of 40 to 60 Candy XL per win, the 85 wins it takes bring in about 4,250 Candy XL, enough to carry on to Level 47. Up to there, Candy is what holds you back. After that it's XL.

Here Candy XL and Stardust count from Level 40, but wins still count from Level 15, because the XL arrives with the Candy you farm for Level 40. A perfect Level 50 Eternatus shows 5,067 CP while it's your Best Buddy, because the bond adds one level.

Is Rare Candy Worth Using on Eternatus?

Rare Candy turns into Eternatus Candy one for one, the same rate as for any other Legendary. Since Eternatus needs more than 30 times the usual Candy, players on Reddit call it the worst possible use of Rare Candy. Walking doesn't help much either, because Eternatus earns one Candy per 20 km as your buddy.

If you still want to spend Rare Candy on it, do it early. Between Level 15 and 20, 100 Rare Candy buys 1.7 power-ups. At Level 39, the same 100 buys about a tenth of one. Rare Candy XL works the same way once you reach Level 40, and our Candy XL guide explains where to get it.

Does a Low-IV Eternatus Hurt?

Less than it looks. At Level 40, a 10/10/10 Eternatus has 4,262 CP and a perfect one has 4,429. That's 3.8% less CP but only 1.7% less Attack, and Attack is what sets your damage. You only get one Eternatus per account, so a 10/10/10 is still worth building.

Eternatus Max Moves: Max Attack First or Levels First?

In a Max Battle, Eternatus always uses Dynamax Cannon as its Max Move, whichever fast move it knows. That Max Move hits as hard as a Gigantamax move, and upgrading it does more for Max Battles than any power-up in the high 30s.

These costs come from players' 2025 reports. Dynamax Cannon, the Max Attack, starts at Level 1, while Max Guard and Max Spirit start locked. Taking Dynamax Cannon from Level 1 to 3 raises its power from 350 to 450, which is 28.6% more Max Move damage for 2,400 Candy. The same 2,400 Candy takes a Level 35 Eternatus to Level 38.5 and adds less than 3% Attack.

So if Eternatus is for Max Battles, max out Dynamax Cannon before you chase levels in the high 30s. If it's only for raids, skip Max Moves, because raids never use them. Max Guard and Max Spirit cost 5,600 Candy together, and teams usually leave shielding and healing to Pokémon like Crowned Shield Zamazenta and Blissey.

One catch: Max Moves cost regular Candy, and Candy XL can't power Eternatus up until Level 40. Every Candy you put into Max Moves pushes back the day your XL becomes useful for levels.

Is the Eternatus Adventure Effect Worth the Candy?

Dynamax Cannon also has an Adventure Effect, a timed boost you switch on outside of battle. The game's August 2025 Dynamax Cannon Adventure Effect post puts it at 5,000 Stardust and 30 Eternatus Candy for 10 minutes. While it runs, your Pokémon's Max Moves go up one level in Max Battles.

Locked Max Moves act as Level 1. Level 3 moves jump to a Level 4 that hits much harder than a normal step, and players put it at 450 power for regular Max Moves and 550 for Gigantamax moves. Each tap of Use adds up to two hours in 10-minute steps, and you can keep tapping up to 24 hours in total. It can't run alongside another Adventure Effect, such as Crowned Zacian's or Zamazenta's, and it doesn't boost Zacian or Zamazenta themselves.

A full day costs 720,000 Stardust, which is more than powering Eternatus all the way from Level 15 to 50 (496,400). Use it in short bursts for Max Battles you might lose, and keep about 360 Candy aside so you can always buy one two-hour tap. Our Stardust guide has ways to refill the Stardust side.

Best Eternatus Moveset in Pokémon GO

Your Eternatus knows Dynamax Cannon, and players found in 2025 that it can't forget it. That leaves two choices: the fast move, and whether to unlock a second Charged Attack for 100 Candy and 100,000 Stardust.

Keep one thing in mind. Dynamax Cannon is a Dragon move, and Dragon moves hit Fairy types for only about 39% damage. Against Fairy and Grass raid bosses, unlock Sludge Bomb as the second Charged Attack and pair it with Poison Jab. A second Charged Attack works in raids too, not only in trainer battles.

Eternatus also takes normal damage from Fairy moves instead of resisting them like most Poison types, one more reason to keep it away from Fairy bosses. Against Grass bosses, it's one of the best Poison attackers you can bring.

How to Beat Eternamax Eternatus in Pokémon GO Max Battles

Leave your raid team at home. Eternamax Eternatus is a six-star Max Battle, so only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can fight it, along with Crowned Zacian, Crowned Zamazenta and Eternatus itself. Each try costs 800 Max Particles, and they're only taken if your group wins.

It's a big-group fight. A lobby holds up to 40 Trainers in groups of four, and a good group runs two attackers, one tank and one healer. Start each team with a charger, a Pokémon with a 0.5-second fast move that fills the Max Meter fast, then switch to your attacker when it's time to Dynamax.

Eternamax is weak to Dragon, so Eternatus is the best attacker if you already own one. Without it, Dynamax Latios, Metagross, Excadrill, Hatterene and Latias were the top picks in 2025. Crowned Shield Zamazenta is the best tank, with Crowned Sword Zacian close behind, and Dynamax Blissey is the healer to bring.

If the leaked dates hold, the week before gives you time to get ready. Crowned Sword Zacian raids return in a Raid Hour on Monday, November 9, and Crowned Shield Zamazenta raids on Tuesday, November 10, both from 6 to 7 p.m. local time. Dynamax Latias and Latios appear in five-star Max Battles on Friday, November 13, according to the Into the Wild announcement. Spend the rest of the week saving Max Particles and leveling Max Guard on your tank and Max Spirit on your healer.

Already own Eternatus? Keep 360 Candy for a two-hour Adventure Effect, and try it on November's Dragon-weak bosses. Dynamax Regidrago (five-star Max Battles, Thursday, November 12) and Dynamax Palkia (Max Battles on Sunday, November 15, during GO Wild Area: Global) both take super effective damage from Dynamax Cannon.

Eternatus Pokémon GO Stats, Max CP and Weaknesses

As a Poison and Dragon type, Eternatus has four weaknesses and seven resistances. Fairy moves land as neutral, because its Poison resistance and Dragon weakness cancel out.

In raids, Eternatus ranks with the very best Dragon and Poison attackers. Mega Rayquaza still earns a spot next to it, because its Mega boost raises every Dragon-type attack in the raid, Eternatus's included. Our Legendary Pokémon guide covers how the rest of the game's Legendaries are caught.

Can You Trade Eternatus in Pokémon GO or Buy One?

No, and no. Eternatus can't be traded, and it can't be moved to Pokémon HOME. So an "Eternatus for sale" listing isn't selling the Pokémon. It's selling a whole account that has one.

Selling or trading accounts breaks the game's Terms of Service, so a bought account can be suspended or banned, Eternatus and all. If you missed 2025, the next official event is the real way to get one.
